Nonviolent activist tasered at DOJ while protesting for Wall Street prosecutions

A woman who became an activist after JPMorgan Chase foreclosed on her home in 2011 was shocked with a Taser and arrested while protesting outside the Department of Justice on Tuesday.

In video obtained by Occupy Our Homes Atlanta, large men with assault rifles can be seen surrounding Carmen Pittman before one of the agents shocks her with a stun gun and she falls to the ground.

Pittman seems to writhe in agony on the ground for a few moments before a man in a yellow police shirt picks her up. As he restrains her, other officers place her in handcuffs.

“My every Christmas, my every Thanksgiving, my every birthday, my every dinner was in this house,” Pittman told The Huffington Post as she was fighting the foreclosure of her Atlanta home in 2011. “This was the base home. We could not stay away from this home. This home is my every memory.”

The Washington Post reported that 17 people were arrested out of the 100 or so demonstrators at the event organized by the Home Defenders League and Occupy Our Homes on Tuesday. The protesters were calling on Attorney General Eric Holder to prosecute Wall Street banks. Holder has said that such prosecutions would put the financial system at risk.

Occupy Our Homes has planed a Wall Street Accountability Week of Action in Washington, D.C. for May 18 through May 23.

Coca Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. workers under the Unyon ng mga Manggagawang Driver, Forklift Operator, at Picker sa Coca Cola Sta Rosa-Independent (UMDFP-CCBPI-IND) launched their strike at the Coca Cola Sta. Rosa plant on May 21, around 4 o’clock in the morning. Workers said their decisive move to launch their strike was their highest and last political resort to call for their rights to wages, benefits, tenure, and union. As they set-up camps and picket lines outside the Coca Cola plant, workers called on consumers to support their strike, as they face severe working conditions in and out of the factory.

On April 22, 16-year-old Kiera Wilmot was arrested at her Polk County high school for conducting a science experiment. The teen, who has no criminal history and maintained good grades, suddenly found herself trapped in Florida’s insidious school to prison pipeline; which has continually funneled mostly youth of color out of Florida’s schools and into the criminal justice system.

According to a report by Florida’s Department of Juvenile Justice, over 57% of the state’s 96,515 youth incarcerated in 2012 were Black and Brown. In Kiera’s home of Polk County, Sheriff Grady Judd has presided over a system in which youth have continually been cycled through county jails in which severe abuses have been alleged including the use of pepper spray and the holding of juveniles in cages.

During the 2013 Florida Legislative Session, Dream Defenders worked with allies in the Florida Campaign for Juvenile Justice to reform Florida’s broken juvenile justice system. Despite repeated community visits to the state capital, briefings and press conferences by advocates and sponsoring legislators, the 2013 Legislative session closed with no action on critical bills such as SB 1374/HB 1039 which would have reformed Florida’s Zero Tolerance law at play in this case.

While Kiera navigates the legal ramifications of her unjust case Polk County Superintendent John Stewart has made the decision to place Kiera in an “alternative school” as he considers expulsion proceedings. Dream Defenders find these actions by Superintendent Stewart reprehensible. Dream Defenders demands that Stewart drop all expulsion proceedings against Kiera Wilmot and allow her to return to her enrollment at Bartow High School.

Dream Defenders calls upon all local, state and national allies to TAKE ACTION to ensure Kiera does not become another casualty of the school to prison pipeline.
